Kalungwishi River Waterfalls

The Kalungwishi River has its source in the central part of Lunte District in Northern Province. It flows westwards to its confluence with the Ngona River, its tributary. From there it flows north-westwards, forming part of the boundary between Kawambwa District in Luapula Province and Lunte District.

The river defines the boundaries between Kawambwa and Mporokoso District in Northern Province, Kawambwa and Kaputa District in Northern Province, Nchelenge District in Luapula Province and Kaputa District. It finally flows through the village of Mununga, which it divides into two, in Chienge District and into Lake Mweru.

There are four waterfalls on the Kalungwishi River. The Mbulumatuto, Lumangwe, Kabwelume and Kundabwika Falls all lie on the boundary between Luapula and Northern provinces.

The Lumangwe and Kabwelume Falls

Travellers between Kawambwa and Mporokoso may not know. The Lumangwe Falls is just 10Km from the bridge on the Kalungwishi River, downstream. A little bit further (5.7Km from the Lumangwe) is the Kabwelume Falls. It would be a good idea for one to branch off, 2.57Km from the bridge on the Mporokoso side of the boundary, to go and see the Falls.

The Kundabwika Falls

The Kundabwika Falls lies on the Kalungwishi River, the boundary between Nchelenge and Kaputa districts. It’s 4.3Km off the Mununga Mporokoso road at a point 38Km south east of Mununga and 46Km north west of Mukunsa on the Kawambwa Mporokoso Road.

The Mbulumatuto Falls

The Mbulumatuto Falls is the only waterfalls in Luapula Province that is not accessible by car. The Mbulumatuto Falls is on the Kalungwishi River, the boundary between Kawambwa and Lunte Districts. The rest of the waterfalls are easily accessible by car.
