The Luapula River flows from Lake Bangweulu into Lake Mweru, forming part of the International Boundary between the Republic of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are, currently, only two bridges across the river. The Mukuku Bridge on the Samfya-Serenje Road and the Levy Mwanawa Bridge on the Chembe-Mokambo Road.
Through an agreement between the governments of the two countries and private partners another bridge across the Luapula River is planned for construction. The bridge will come with a road that will be constructed between Mwenda on the Chipili-Kawambwa Road in Chipili District of Luapula Province in Zambia and Kasomeno in DR Congo. Construction of the road and bridge will greatly shorten the distance covered by transporters of goods between Nakonde in Muchinga Province of Zambia, on the border with Tanzania, and DR Congo who at the moment have to pass through Central and Copperbelt provinces.
