The Long Route To Luapula

The city of Ndola is the Provincial Hq of the Copperbelt Province, a province known for its Copper production in Zambia. The city is the industrial hub of the province, producing various items sought by merchants and retailers from within and outside the province.

The Municipality  of Mansa is the Provincial Hq of the Luapula Province. The province is famous for its water resource and fisheries. It produces fish sold in various towns on the Copperbelt, Ndola included.

The Pedicle Road, through the Democratic Republic of Congo, for many years provided the shortest and only direct route between the Luapula Province and the Copperbelt Province. This was the route taken by travellers between the two provinces. At times, however, motorists were forced to take a long route due to border closures. The distance between Ndola and Mansa, via Kitwe and  through the DR Congo is 283Km. The long route to Luapula, from Ndola to Mansa, took travellers through Kapiri Mposhi, Mkushi and Serenje in Central Province, Mpika, Kasama and Luwingu in Northern Province  and Chipili in Luapula Province. A distance of 1107Km. To overcome the hardships encountered by the travellers, therefore, the Republic of Zambia decided to construct, with the assistance of the People’s Republic of China, the Tuta Road between Serenje in Central Province and Samfya in Luapula Province.
