In the Luapula Province of the Republic of Zambia, the population has always depended on fishing and subsistence agriculture as its source of livelihood.
For many years there was nothing to speak of in terms of large scale agriculture in the province. No commercial farms existed except for the Mununshi Banana Scheme in Mwense District, Kawambwa Tea Estate and Chishinga Cattle Ranch in Kawambwa District, all of which were state owned. The people of the province never reared any Cattle or Pigs. The only livestock reared in the province were Goats, Sheep, Chickens and Ducks. Of late, however, the government has been encouraging people in the province to keep Cattle, and has distributed some among some families. These families are in turn encouraged to distribute the Cattle among other families as theirs grow in numbers.
The Luapula Province has a large water resource in form of lakes and rivers, a lot of arable land and receives good rainfall. These factors make the province an excellent choice for agricultural investment. Hence, large farms for Cassava and Sugarcane production were recently set up. More will be.
