Mpulungu Harbour – A Landlocked Country’s Port.

Zambia is a landlocked country. The country, nevertheless, has a port in the town of Mpulungu (which is a District HQ) on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in Mpulungu District of Northern Province.

Lake Tanganyika is shared by Zambia, DR Congo,  Tanzania and Burundi. Ships like MV Liemba and the 3,500 ton cargo and 500  passenger capacity MV Amani dock at Mpulungu Harbour to load or offload both cargo and passengers, including tourists, to and from the other three countries. Some of Zambia’ exports, such as Portland Cement, Sugar, etc are loaded at this port and shipped to DR Congo and Burundi.
